OMMER EUGENE BRUCE, SR.

Ommer Eugene Bruce, Sr. was born on November 9, 1932 to the late Henry and Azzie Bruce. The fourth child of 8 children. He was ordained as a Baptist minister on August 2, 1987, and was a member of the Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in De Kalb, Texas. On August 20, 1991, he received his preacher’s license to preach in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in De Kalb, Texas. Also, becoming the Pastor of the Heglar Methodist Church and for a time, Pastor of the True Vine Baptist Church. He went on to become the President of the Progressive Zion Baptist Association for about four years, overseeing about 10 churches. He worked with many different churches and church organizations throughout Texas. In 2007, he became a member of the Bethel Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Texarkana, Texas and was ordained as local Elder. Also, becoming a Sabbath School teacher. He worked for many years as the Bowie County and DISD’s voting judge. He worked at Sears and Roebucks and Red River Army Depot. Graduated in mechanics at the National School of Mechanics. He also served in the Army and became a war veteran by serving in the Korean War.

On February 9, 2023 at 4:20 A.M., Pastor Bruce closed his eyes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; four sisters; and one son, Craig.

He leaves behind his wife, Mary Bruce; children, Jackie, Ommer, Jr. and his wife, Irene, Gerald and his wife, Agnes, Derek and his wife, Sonja, the wife of his late son Craig, Vickie; grandsons, Craig, Jr., Galen, Gerald, Jr. and his wife, Emily, and Nathan; granddaughters, Ashley and Amber; great grandchildren, Kelby, Kimora, Kianna, and Isaiah; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Bates Family Funeral Home in De Kalb, Texas with Dr. Christopher Manuel officiating. Interment will follow at Garland Cemetery in De Kalb, Texas.

Visitation will be held 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Bates Family Funeral Home in De Kalb, Texas.
