Lady Lions hold off Redwater for district win

Lady Pirates start district play with win over Clarksville

District play kicked off Tuesday night, with the big match of the night on the court in New Boston, as state ranked Redwater faced the Lady Lions.

It was a back and forth matchup between the two squads that saw the Lady Lions take the first two sets. The Lady Dragons came firing back to take sets three and four, setting up a winner take all fifth set.

In the final set, the Lady Dragons jumped out to an early lead, but the ladies from New Boston roared back and took the final set and the match, by a score of 25-13, 25-18, 24-26, 22-25, 15-9.

 

Senior Haley McAlexander had all-star numbers in the matchup with 19 service points, a pair of kills, 42 assists and 10 digs. Fellow seniors Emma Holland and Lauren “Loh” Hurst were also in beast mode for the Lady Lions. Holland had 13 service points, 10 kills and seven digs, while Hurst was a force up front with five service points, 16 kills, 16 digs, five block assists and a solo block.

Also on the stat sheet for the Lady Lions were Brianna Bell with six kills, Lauren Daniel with 18 digs and three service points and Megan Daniel with 12 digs and four service points.  Jaleigh Rowden had a pair of kills, a pair of blocks and three block assists, Tamiya Smith  pitched in with five kills,  a pair of solo blocks and three block assists, and senior libero Maggie Taylor ended the match with five service points, 25 digs and three kills.

 

For the visiting Lady Dragons, Kyndal Missildine was the leading server with 16 service points. Sydney Hornbuckle had eight kills and six blocks and  Cooper Frachiseur had 14 assists.

 

In JV action at New Boston, Abrianna Scott paced the Lady Lions in a 16-25, 25-17, 25-14 win over the Lady Dragons in the JV1 contest. Redwater’s Maycie Covington had 13 service points in the contest.

In JV2 play, New Boston also grabbed the win as Marli Thomas paced the host squad in their25-20, 22-25, 25-21 win. Redwater’s Judah Dawson led all scorers with 16 points.

 

On Friday, New Boston will play in Hooks, Varsity only, starting at 4:30. The Lady Dragons will travel to play the DeKalb Lady Bears.

The ladies from James Bowie also started district play Tuesday night, and came away with a big win, as they knocked off the Clarksville Lady Tigers in three sets by a score of 25-7, 25-5, 25-10.

Gracie Brown was the big stick for James Bowie, leading the way with 29 service points, eight digs and nine kills. Senior Emily Latham had 11 assists.

James Bowie defeated Clarksville in the Junior varsity match as well, by a final score of 25-19, 25-13. In that contest, Alyson Cherry had 10 service points and Hollyn Tutt had 3 kills.
