Camels, Kangaroos and Giraffes, Oh My!
Youth from the area were invited to the Project Xero Youth Fellowship at the Safari event Monday, June 10. The youth day was a partnership with Project Xero and the Giraffe Inn and Safari. The event allowed families to visit the safari park at no charge where they were welcome to feed and pet the animals and have a fun day of fellowship with the community.

New business opens
Top, David Bradford, Loren Hatle, Ron Humphrey and Meredith Osani cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the corporate headquarters of Armed Forces Future Initiatives LLC at 204 Collum Street in New Boston Friday. The AFFI will focus on corrosion engineering services and provide training in safe and effective corrosion removal for industrial and military contracts.

New station for Simms VFD
The Simms Volunteer Fire Department held the grand opening of their newest station house Saturday. Station 2 is located on U.S. Hwy 67 near the intersection of Texas State Hwy 98. The second station will allow faster response times for residents in their service area. Having multiple stations helps lower a community’s Insurance Services Office number which inturn helps lower homeowners’ insurance premiums. Station 1 of the SVFD is located in the Siloam Community at Farm to Market roads 990 and 561.

DeKalb EDC honored
The DeKalb Economic Development Corporation was recognized by the Texas Economic Development Council as a 2023 Economic Excellence Recognition program recipient. The announcement came at the 2024 TEDC Annual Winter Conference in San Antonio. The DEDC was one of only 72 economic development organizations in the state to be recognized. This is the second year the DEDC has earned the state distinction. “The TEDC’s Economic Excellence Recognition program is one of the ways in which our organization honors the outstanding commitment to excellence of our communities and regions, their leaders, and their economic development professionals have toward the professionalization of their economic development efforts,” noted Carlton Schwab, TEDC president and CEO. Simms athletes shine at State
The Simms Pirates 8 & under softball team took third place in the 8U Rec State Softball Tournament. The tournament was held in Pearland, Texas, June 7 to June 9 and featured 45 teams from across the state. The Pirates finished their season undefeated in league play and saw only five losses in tournament play. Players are Ali Forsyth (7), Jolie Bartlett (3), Madi May (12), Bella Braley (4), Dusti Bartlett (14), Hadley Morton

Project Lifesaver to aid finding the lost in NE Texas
A partnership between the Cass County and Miller County Sheriff’s Offices, and the Alzheimer’s Alliance Tri-State Area will offer a Project Lifesaver program that will aid families of those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, as well as Autism and Down Syndrome.
