New Year’s Financial Resolutions
New Year’s Financial Resolutions
Now that we’ve reached 2024, you might be thinking about your goals and hopes for the new year. But in addition to whatever personal resolutions you might make — volunteering, going to the gym more, learning a new language and others — why not make some financial resolutions, too? 01/03/2024 10:00 AM

The ink was barely dry on a law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott that makes unauthorized entry into the United States a state crime before a lawsuit was filed by civil rights groups and El Paso County challenging its constitutionality. The Austin American-Statesman reported the suit was filed in an Austin federal court by the ACLU and two immigrant advocacy groups on behalf of the county. 12/27/2023 10:00 AM
Christmas memories
Christmas memories
Christmas is officially over and I hope that all of you had a great one. Now, as we look toward a new year, I found myself hanging on to Christmas just a little and wanted to share something that I wrote years ago. When the kids are little and there are tons of presents under the tree, Christmas is so much different than when the kids are all grown. There is the excitement in the air as they go to bed on Christmas Eve anxiously awaiting the next morning, wondering what Santa would bring them during the night. There is the joy for parents as we watch our little babies tear into their gifts and see the happy smiles on their faces and the shrieks when they open that one gift that you know is going to be “the big one.” 12/27/2023 10:00 AM
Time: A key element of investing
Time: A key element of investing
Who knows where the time goes? We’ve reached the end of another year, so it’s appropriate to reflect on the nature of time and how it affects us. And time certainly is a key element in the pursuit of your financial goals. 12/27/2023 10:00 AM

A total of $18 billion in property tax cuts were approved by more than 80% of voters in the November general election and should be reflected in property tax bills that are due by Jan. 31. The cuts come in the form of increased home exemptions, lower school district rates, and limiting the amount property appraisals can rise. 12/20/2023 10:00 AM
Avoid tapping into retirement savings early
Avoid tapping into retirement savings early
If you want to make a big purchase, such as a new car or a piece of property, or you were faced with a large, unexpected expense, such as a major home or auto repair, would you have the funds readily available? If not, you might look at what may be your biggest pool of money — your 401(k) or IRA. But should you tap into these accounts well before you retire? 12/20/2023 10:00 AM
And now, the rest of the story
And now, the rest of the story
Well, we had another one of those things that don’t happen here, happen here. By now most of you have heard that there was a bomb scare at New Boston High School last Wednesday. If you had not heard, now you have. It was another one of those days that just is not supposed to happen around here. It was another day that seems absurd when you talk to folks who have been here a while, because it was so out of the realm of normalcy. But yet, it happened, and those things that are not supposed to happen here… seem to be happening here more and more often. 12/20/2023 10:00 AM

Fear he is a liar
Fear he is a liar
There is a song I really like right now called “Fear is a Liar.” I have no doubt that Zach Williams likely sang it at his concert locally last week. The song has a great message and it is one that is very relevant this week. The song has lyrics that say, “Fear, he is a liar, He will take your breath, Stop you in your steps, Fear he is a liar, He will rob your rest, Steal your happiness, Cast your fear in the fire, ‘Cause fear he is a liar.” 12/06/2023 10:00 AM
OP-ED No place for drug dealers and slum lords
OP-ED No place for drug dealers and slum lords
When landlords choose to rent their property to drug dealers in exchange for cash, they are making a short-term financial decision that has long-term negative consequences for the community. This practice not only damages the reputation of the neighborhood, but it also poses significant risks to the safety and well-being of residents. 11/29/2023 10:00 AM
