Local artists subject of new exhibit at Historic Washington State Park ‘
Artists of Washington’ to open in September, feature local artists Historic Washington State Park will host an opening reception for the “Artists of Washington” exhibit on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1:30 p.m. at the park’s 1874 Visitor Information Center, 100 SW Morrison St., Washington. Steven Carlson, an expert on local artist Effie Anderson Smith, will speak at the reception, which is free and open to the public.

The Judge Joni Tidwell Haldeman History of Bowie County Initiative seeks to involve students with local history
The Tribune embarked last week on a new campaign to involve local high school students with learning, and preserving, the rich history of Bowie County. An announcement was made last week and was sent out via social media and emails to the superintendents of local school districts in reference to a journalism “assignment” for students in our local schools. The Tribune fully believes speaking about and publishing the history of Bowie County would be of great value to our readers and to the students themselves and we would love to see those stories in our local newspaper.

Some useful words of advice for Texas dove hunters
Texas dove hunters got a timely reprieve from the blazing summer heat when a mild cool front passed through the state just ahead of the September 1 season opener in the North and Central Zones. The welcomed change in the weather spurred forecasts calling for overnight lows in the 60s and 70s and daytime highs in 90s across most of the state over the long Labor Day weekend.

HOME program still available to Bowie County homeowners
During the gathering of data for the 2023-2028 5-year Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS), information about the HOME Grant from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) in the North East Texas/ ATCOG region came to light. In the past five years seven of our nine counties have participated in the HOME program. This program is not a competitive grant process! Any of the ATCOG region cities or counties that wish to participate in the program are eligible.

Plans in progress for updated Texas side animal holding facility
Plans are in progress for updates to the Texarkana, Texas animal holding facility. The city is working alongside architects with Shelter Planners of American out of Arlington, Texas to generate floor plans to renovate the current building. The architect group, known nationwide for their experience and expertise in updating and building animal shelters, recently met with city staff to present their recommendations.
