Warm Toes and Fingers
I rounded the corner, peering out the car window. A flicker of movement caught my eye—a figure darting up from the thicket with a quick, deliberate motion, only to duck back down. My heart skipped. Who was that? I was looking for my homeless friends, hoping to bring them a little warmth—hand warmers, blankets, scripture cards—just enough to remind them that someone cares. My eyes scanned the trails near the camps, watching for signs of life.

The DeKalb Bears
The DeKalb Bears hosted Redwater last Friday night with the Dragons earning the win in the varsity boys game and the Lady Bears overpowering the Lady Dragons in the girls contest. The Dragons and Bears put on a show for the fans as their nail-biter came down to the final seconds with Redwater making some clutch free throws in the end to secure a 59-53 win. In the girls matchup, the Lady Bears held onto their 3rd spot in the district standings with a 75-24 win. The Lady Bears will finish their district season with a Friday game against Queen City and then the finale next Tuesday with a home game against Hooks.

2025 Miss DeKalb Pageant holds orientation
The DeKalb Professional Women’s Organization hosted their annual orientation recently with a large number of local young ladies turning out to take part in this year’s event. The pageant this year invites young ladies to “Sparkle Like it’s 1999” and will be held on March 8 and is sure to be a night for all to remember. Pictured are this year’s contestants.

SHIRLEY ANN SMITH
Shirley Ann Smith, age 72 of New Boston, Texas went to her heavenly home Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Mrs. Smith was born April 30, 1952 in Texarkana, Arkansas to William and Maggie Alexander. She had a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and worked as the Invoice Clerk with Walmart for 38 years. She was also a member of Faith Baptist Church, New Boston and is preceded in death by her parents, Husband, Loyd Smith, Great Grandson, Rush Hayes Thompson, and a sister, Opal Steel. She is survived by her daughter, Holly Burleson (Randy), son, Geoffrey Smith, grandchildren, Haley and Daniel Thompson and Hunter Burleson, great grandchildren, Layla Jo Burleson, Ridge Crew Thompson, Ledger Blake Burleson, Riley Jett Thompson and a number of other relatives and friends. Graveside Funeral services will take place Friday, January 24, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. in Read Hill Cemetery, New Boston with Bro. Anthony Tropp officiating. There is no set visitation. Appraisal district warns of new scams
Scamming has become an epidemic, not only in the United States, but worldwide. The Federal Trade Commission reports that an estimated $10 billion was lost to scammers in the U.S. in 2023, the highest ever in a single year. The FTC also reports that there were 2.6 million individual fraud reports in 2023. Of those reports from 2023, 358,00 were perpetrated through email scams. Phone scams accounted for an average of $1,480 per victim, and above that were social media scams which accounted for a total of $1.4 billion dollars in losses.
