Judge’s ruling could impact future of Marvin Nichols
A recent decision by a Texas judge at least temporarily halted the construction of a proposed reservoir near Wichita Falls, Texas that has glaring similarities to the Northeast Texas opposition to the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir in the Sulphur River Basin.

A taste of Christmas for the Telford Unit
Telford Prison Ministries once again brightened the lives of Telford Unit inmates with a bag of candy for Christmas. Candy is collected throughout the year and then packaged by a host of volunteers and distributed to every inmate inside the unit. This year, over 2400 offenders received the bags of candy. This was Edna Walker’s 21st year of making sure those inside the unit received a little joy for the holidays.

NRCS Texas Announces Application Deadline for the Conservation Stewardship Program
While the NRCS continuously accepts applications for enrollment into the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) (both Classic and CSP-Inflation Reduction Act [IRA]) throughout the year, interested applicants must submit applications to the local U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) field office by Jan. 26, 2024, for the CSP Classic and the CSPIRA sign up. Any applications received after Jan. 26, 2024, will be considered for future CSP application sign ups. USDA is increasing the minimum annual payment for agricultural producers participating in the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) from $1,500 to $4,000 starting in fiscal year 2024. The increase addresses challenges faced by small scale, underserved, and urban producers and improves equity in the program by making participation more financially beneficial for smaller operations. The new minimum payment is available for new and renewed CSP contracts.

The batter’s box of life
When I moved to Texas as a single mom in 1982, I did my best to ensure my son, Marty, a mere first-grader, made new friends. I wanted him to belong, to not feel alone in our new place. So, one day at JC Penney’s, he was picking out a new ball glove for his team. And I touched the adult gloves, sliding my right hand into one. The memories flooded back, and my fingers melted inside the molded spots inside the glove.
