Barnes found guilty on 33 counts
Cody Barnes of New Boston was found guilty last week by a Bowie County jury of 33 seperate counts in relation to charges for a laundry list of sexual assault of a child and child neglect filed a little over a year ago. The couple was arrested in September of 2023 on charges that included continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and three counts of indecency with a child by contact. Additional charges were added later that included continuous sexual abuse of a child, prohibited sexual conduct, injury to a child with the intent to cause serious bodily injury and/or mental impairment. The trial was conducted in the 202nd District Court of Judge John Tidwell.

New K-9 officer Goose to start serving New Boston in January
Efforts are underway to get a new K9 officer on the streets of New Boston and to make sure he and his handler are well equipped to protect and serve the citizens of the city.

Shop with a Cop returns for 2024 Christmas season
The annual Shop with a Cop was held last weekend with representatives from the New Boston Police Department, the New Boston Volunteer Fire Department, the Bowie County Sheriff ’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Game Wardens and the DeKalb ISD.

House Speaker Dade Phelan withdrew last week from seeking another term leading that chamber. After three rounds of voting on Saturday, state Rep. David Cook, R-Mansfield emerged as the preference of most House Republicans. However, his opponent, state Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, claims to have enough support from both Republicans and Democrats to clear the 76vote threshold.

Lip Balm instead of Beer
Mike stood outside his home, a worn-down place in Texarkana known for abandoned houses. I’d met Mike when he first begged me for a quarter, a journey of gathering coins for his beer. He even followed me inside the store, where I offered to buy him lip balm instead, which he accepted that I’d deterred him from his quarter-pan handling.
