Letter to the Editor
I grew up a stone’s throw away from the Sulphur River in northern Franklin County. As a child I was always struck by how wild and untouched it seemed to be. With the exception of roads that crossed it out of necessity, it looked unchanged from centuries ago.

Community
There is a lot to be said about the value of community. Whether it be a resounding response to a local fundraiser, a meal chain for a family in need, or a local church making beds for kids, the word “community” around here hits just a little harder.

A moment in the parking lot
The bearded man stopped me in the shelter’s parking lot. His face seemed weighed down by troubles, or so it seemed, maybe those he could no longer carry alone. As he approached, he began to unload his story, each word falling heavy. He hoped I held the answer he sought—a bus ticket to another town.

2024 National Night Out
National Night Out was held last week in New Boston and saw flocks of community memberse out showing their support for our local police forces. According to their website, “National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.” The community came together to celebrate the local protectors with food, games, music and more.

Celebrating the rhythm
Several local school bands have been bringing the noise during competitions. Last week, bands from New Boston, Hooks, Maud and Redwater traveled to Grim Stadium at Texarkana ISD to show off their skills and showcase their craft. Once the competition was over, Redwater ISD came home with 1st place and Hooks ISD brought home 5th.
